Do's

  • Start slow and practice balance This helps you build control early. Tip: Try turning your board using the tail whilst stationary before riding.
  • Wear proper shoes and safety gear Certain shoes are made for skating you should never wear other types when riding. This means NO TENNIS SHOES! Tip: Find a professional skater you like and wear the same shoes.
  • Learn the basics before tricks You must learn to control the skateboard under you before you can attempt tricks. However still expiriment and try tricks anyways! Tip: Repeat manuevers you have already accomplished.
  • Practice consistently Ride as much as humanly possible, naturally you will gain skills. Tip: Skateboarding is more fun with friends, find a crew!
  • Stay relaxed and have fun Its okay to be competitive, but love what you are doing! Tip: You know you love skateboarding when you are able to practice by yourself and you still have fun.

Don'ts

  • Don't rush into advanced tricks Experiment! Try every trick, sometimes you unintentionally learn tricks that way. However, you must continue to practice the basics. Tip: Repetition is key, also it is best to try tricks you can picture in your imagination.
  • Don't get frustrated Skateboarding is hard for anybody. Don't expect to much from yourself its okay to have a "bad day". Tip: Make a habit of laughing when you fall.
  • Don't ignore falls—learn from them Falling is normal, you will fall more than you will land. The attempt of a trick itself is what teaches you. Tip: Pay attention to why you think you fell.
  • Don't compare yourself to others Your skill level is something you should be proud of no matter what you can do. Tip: What others accomplish should not create envy, it should motivate you that it is possible for you to do the same.
  • Don't give up too early You will never gain skills by quitting, picture your ideal skill level and don't stop till you reach that point, raise the bar as you learn. Tip: You know what you want to accomplish, put in the work to get there but enjoy the journey along the way.
